L-Carnitine – a sugar-free liquid fat burner with 2200 mg L-carnitine per serving and laboratory-verified quality

L-Carnitine by GymBeam is a liquid concentrate containing 220 000 mg L-carnitine per litre. One 10ml measure provides 2200 mg L-carnitine and contains just 9 kcal, with no sugar or carbohydrates. You can drink it directly or mix it with water to make a refreshing fruity drink. Instead of mixing powder with water or swallowing several capsules, you get a tasty sports drink.

You can choose from three flavours: orange, forest fruits and tropical fruits. The 500 ml bottle provides 50 servings, while the litre bottle provides 100 servings.

What is L-carnitine and what role does it play in the body?

L-carnitine is a substance made from the amino acids lysine and methionine. The body can produce some of it itself in the liver and kidneys, with the rest coming from food and dietary supplements. Red meat contains the most, with smaller amounts found in fish, poultry and dairy products. Plant-based foods contain very little.

The physiological role of carnitine is well documented. Long-chain fatty acids cannot cross the inner mitochondrial membrane on their own. They need a carrier, and that is where carnitine comes in. It binds to a fatty acid, transports it inside and then detaches. Mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, then burn the fatty acid to produce energy in the form of ATP.⁸

How much L-carnitine do you get from your diet?

Carnitine is found almost exclusively in animal-based sources, and amounts vary by orders of magnitude between foods. Red meat is the richest source, with each 100 g containing approximately 50 to 145 mg. Poultry and milk provide a few milligrams, while plant-based foods provide tenths of a milligram.⁷

One 10ml serving of L-Carnitine contains as much L-carnitine as 1,5 kg of beef

According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, an adult weighing roughly 75 kg gets 24 to 145 mg per day from a mixed diet and around 1,2 mg from a vegan diet. Vegetarians fall somewhere in between, depending on how much dairy they consume.⁷

One 10ml measure of L-Carnitine by GymBeam contains 2200 mg, more than fifteen times the upper end of the usual daily intake for someone eating a mixed diet. To get the same amount from food, you would need to eat at least 1,5 kilograms of beef daily. Supplementation therefore makes sense for more than just vegans and vegetarians.

What the studies show

L-carnitine is one of the most extensively researched supplements in the fat burner category. Here are the key findings from the available meta-analyses and studies.

1. Body weight and body composition

A meta-analysis summarised 37 randomised controlled trials involving 2292 participants, with doses ranging from 250 to 4000 mg daily, and the most commonly used dose was 2000 mg.¹

  • Body weight: difference compared with placebo −1,21 kg (24 studies, 1520 participants)
  • Fat mass: difference compared with placebo −2,08 kg (5 studies, 267 participants)
  • BMI: difference compared with placebo −0,24 kg/m² (33 studies, 2120 participants)
  • No effect on waist circumference or body fat percentage was found

The dose-response analysis for body weight showed that taking around 2000 mg carnitine daily offers the greatest benefit in this respect. Higher doses offer no additional benefit. This relationship was not observed for the other parameters.

2. Who benefited most from taking L-carnitine?

A second meta-analysis focused on adults with overweight and obesity and found similar figures. Compared with placebo, body weight was lower by an average of 1,13 kg, BMI by 0,36 kg/m² and fat mass by 1,16 kg.² An earlier meta-analysis of 9 studies involving 911 participants calculated a difference of −1,33 kg.³

More important than the figures themselves is the finding from the subgroup analysis. The effect was observed only in people with overweight and obesity; no difference was found in people of normal weight. Carnitine reduced weight and BMI both on its own and in combination with dietary changes and exercise, but the combined approach produced a greater effect: −0,91 kg versus −1,51 kg.¹

3. Post-exercise recovery

A meta-analysis of 7 randomised trials involving 79 participants found the following with L-carnitine supplementation compared with placebo:⁴

  • lower perceived muscle soreness at all five time points assessed: immediately after exercise and after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours
  • lower levels of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase and myoglobin, but for each marker only in a single sample taken within 24 hours after exercise

Subgroup analysis showed that the effect occurred mainly in untrained people, not in trained individuals, and for creatine kinase only with resistance training. A systematic review further notes that at least three months of supplementation are needed to change carnitine content within the muscle itself, whereas changes in the markers appeared earlier in the studies.⁵

Note: The studies cited describe the results of specific clinical trials of L-carnitine, not a tested effect of this product.

What the studies show
How L-Carnitine by GymBeam differs from standard products

With liquid concentrates, what matters is how much active ingredient each serving contains and whether anyone has measured it. Here are 6 things we do differently:

  • Carnitine in base form, without a carrier. This is the active ingredient itself, without another molecule attached. Capsules and tablets usually contain L-carnitine tartrate, which is carnitine bound to tartaric acid and contains only about 68 % carnitine itself. A declared 2000 mg of tartrate therefore provides roughly 1360 mg carnitine, whereas 2200 mg in our measure is 2200 mg carnitine.
  • A dose in line with those used in studies. One 10ml measure provides 2200 mg L-carnitine. In a meta-analysis of 37 randomised trials, the most commonly used dose was 2000 mg daily, and the dose-response analysis for body weight found the greatest effect at around this amount.¹
  • L-Carnitine undergoes independent laboratory testing for active ingredient content, heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury) and microbiological safety (salmonella, coliform bacteria, yeasts and moulds). Active ingredient content is measured by the accredited laboratory GBA Hamburg (DAkkS D-PL-14170-01-00). Heavy metals and microbiological safety are verified by a second independent laboratory, Labor Dr. Scheller in Augsburg (DAkkS D-PL-19230-01-00).
  • We publish reports dating back to 2021. These are not one-off tests for the product launch, but repeated checks across batches and all flavours. You can find them right here on this page in the Laboratory Tests section.
  • Certified production. The product is made in a facility operating in accordance with ISO 9001 and IFS Food standards.
  • Sugar-free and gluten-free. One serving contains 9 kcal, 0 g carbohydrates and 0 g fat. The product contains no GMOs.
How L-Carnitine by GymBeam differs from standard products

Who is L-Carnitine suitable for?

1. People dieting or in a cutting phase.
Meta-analyses show that carnitine's effect was observed in people with overweight and obesity and was greater when combined with dietary changes and exercise.¹ ²

2. People starting or returning to training.
A meta-analysis of seven randomised trials found lower post-exercise muscle soreness with carnitine supplementation, specifically in untrained individuals.⁴

3. Anyone who eats little red meat.
Red meat contains the most carnitine. A vegan diet provides an average of 1,2 mg daily compared with 24 to 145 mg from a mixed diet.⁷ One measure provides 2200 mg regardless of what your diet looks like.

4. People who dislike swallowing capsules and tablets.
Drink the liquid concentrate straight from the measure, or mix it with water in a shaker to make a sports drink.

5. People who train in the evening.
The formula contains no caffeine or other stimulants, so you can take carnitine even before a workout at ten in the evening without lying awake afterwards.

Who is L-Carnitine suitable for?
When should you take L-Carnitine?

Shake the bottle before use, as the ingredients in this concentrate may settle. Take 10 ml (1 measure) daily. You can drink the concentrate directly or mix it with water or your favourite drink. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

  • Before or during training.
The most common choice. Mix one measure with 300 to 500 ml water and drink during exercise.
  • Before afternoon or evening training.
The formula contains no caffeine or other stimulants, and carnitine does not affect sleep. It is therefore also suitable before evening training, as well as on rest days.
  • Once daily.
Take 10 ml as directed. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
  • With food, not on an empty stomach.
Carnitine transport into muscle depends on insulin, so a systematic review recommends taking it with carbohydrates.⁵ ⁶ Simply take it with a regular meal; there is no need for anything sweet on top.
  • When you watch your diet and stay active.
In studies, carnitine also worked on its own. However, the best results were seen in those who combined it with dietary changes and regular exercise.¹

Carnitine really works. I take the specified amount every day and I genuinely feel that I have more energy even on an ordinary day, and my workouts are more intensive—I can handle it one or two times

I don't really feel any effect, but maybe it’s my mistake, because I’ve already tried several fat burners and with all of them I got the same result. In terms of taste, it’s nothing great either.
