Reviews - Magnesium Citrate - GymBeam | GymBeam.ba Skip to main content

Magnesium Citrate is one of the most readily absorbed forms of magnesium. One serving contains 225 mg of pure magnesium, equivalent to 60 % of the nutrient reference value, and the formula contains nothing but magnesium bound to citric acid. Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to optimal muscle and nervous system function, as well as electrolyte balance. It comes as a highly soluble powder. We manufacture it in Germany and we verify its magnesium content by titration.

Magnesium Citrate – an organic form of magnesium with lab-verified content and high absorption

Magnesium Citrate is a mineral bound to citric acid. This creates an organic form of magnesium that differs from inorganic forms such as magnesium oxide. This bond makes citrate one of the forms of magnesium with high bioavailability.

One 1,5 g serving provides 225 mg of elemental, or pure, magnesium, equivalent to 60 % of the nutrient reference value.1 The formula contains just one ingredient. No fillers, sweeteners, flavourings or anti-caking agents.

We manufacture it in Germany and regularly test it at an independent German laboratory for heavy metals, microbiological quality and active ingredient content.

Citrate for optimal absorption

Magnesium citrate is an organic salt that dissolves in water with virtually no residue, unlike inorganic forms. This dissolved, ionised form is the one the body can use most effectively.

A systematic review of 14 studies on magnesium bioavailability reached a clear conclusion. Organic forms are absorbed better than inorganic forms.3 In a direct comparison of three forms of magnesium at a daily dose of 300 mg for 60 days, the citrate group showed the highest serum magnesium levels, both after the first dose and after two months.2

Citrate is also an intermediate in the Krebs cycle, the pathway through which every cell in the body obtains energy from nutrients. The body is therefore familiar with citrate and knows how to use it, as it constantly produces and consumes it.

Magnesium is involved in more than 300 reactions in the body

Magnesium is a mineral involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions in the body.4 It plays a part in how muscles and nerves work, how the body uses energy and how it handles exertion.

For example, it contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, supports normal muscle and nervous system function and contributes to normal psychological function. It also contributes to electrolyte balance, helping maintain the right levels of important ions such as sodium, potassium and magnesium itself.

In addition, it supports normal energy metabolism, contributes to normal protein synthesis, helps maintain normal bones and teeth and plays a role in the process of cell division.1

When to Take Magnesium Citrate

The time of day is more a matter of personal routine than necessity. Some people take it in the evening because magnesium supports normal muscle and nervous system function.1 Citrate does not have to be taken with food, but if you are more sensitive, it is best to take it after a meal or split the serving into two portions throughout the day.6

At higher doses, magnesium may compete with calcium for absorption, as both minerals use similar transport pathways in the intestine. If you take tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, take magnesium at least two hours before or four to six hours after them, as they can form complexes with magnesium that reduce absorption of the medicine.7 Take similar precautions with bisphosphonates used to treat osteoporosis.7 If you take any medication regularly, consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting magnesium supplementation.

Take magnesium over the long term, ideally for several weeks, to experience the benefits described above. The body replenishes its magnesium stores gradually, so the full benefits of supplementation will not be apparent immediately after the first serving.

Laboratory-Verified Content

For food supplements, transparency throughout the process, from the raw material to the finished powder, is essential. Here are five things we do differently with Magnesium Citrate:

  1. We manufacture the powder in Germany at an IFS-certified facility with an established HACCP system.
  2. We determine the magnesium content by titration, a precise analytical method that measures how much magnesium the powder actually contains, rather than how much it should contain according to the formulation. This gives you confidence that you receive the amount stated on the label.
  3. The product is tested by an independent German laboratory for heavy metal content and microbiological purity. In the latest analysis, lead was at one percent of the legal limit, while cadmium was below the limit of quantification.
  4. We publish test reports dating back to 2022. These are not one-off tests for the product launch, but repeated checks across batches. You can find them right here on this page in the Laboratory Tests section.
  5. There is just one ingredient: magnesium salts of citric acid, and the product is suitable for vegans.

Composition and dosage

Dosage

Dosage and Directions for Use

Mix one-third of a scoop (1,5 g) with 300 ml of water and take once daily.

Recommended Daily Magnesium Intake

  • According to European guidelines (EFSA), the recommended daily magnesium intake is 350 mg for men and 300 mg for women.5
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women have slightly higher requirements. We recommend consulting a doctor about the appropriate dose.
  • Athletes and people under significant physical or mental strain are estimated to need 10 to 20 % more magnesium than people with low levels of physical activity, due to magnesium losses through sweat. This corresponds to approximately 385 to 420 mg per day for men and 330 to 360 mg for women.6
  • One third of a scoop (1,5 g) provides 225 mg of elemental magnesium, equivalent to 60 % of the nutrient reference value. You can adjust the dose according to your physical activity level and total dietary intake.

Please appreciate the packaging and labeling of the parcel; it seems like a safe product and it absorbs well. However, I do not recommend magnesium citrate in any form, because it has a significant laxative effect, even with a small dose. This makes the supplement impossible to take daily without stool-related issues. I would recommend this form of magnesium only for use as a laxative.
