Tribulus terrestris in a dose you can verify with simple calculations. One daily serving contains 1 200 mg of puncture vine extract (Tribulus terrestris) at a ratio of 15:1, equivalent to 18 grams of the original plant material. The extract is standardised to 90 % saponins, providing a total per daily serving of 1 080 mg. Both figures are on the label and can be verified with simple multiplication. The tablet form spares you this plant’s most unpleasant feature: its intensely bitter taste. Vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free and GMO-free, made in the EU and tested in an accredited German laboratory. All this for under three cents per daily serving.

Tribulus Terrestris, 1 200 mg of 15:1 extract per daily serving, equivalent to 18 g of plant material and 1 080 mg of saponins

Tribulus terrestris by GymBeam is a single-ingredient herbal supplement in tablet form. The daily serving is two tablets, containing 1 200 mg of extract from puncture vine (Tribulus terrestris). Apart from the extract itself, the tablet contains only what is necessary for production: a bulking agent, an anti-caking agent and a sweetener that softens the taste of the raw material. No proprietary blend, no extra ingredients.

The plant that earned its name from its thorns

Tribulus terrestris is an unassuming creeping plant from the Zygophyllaceae family, growing in warm, dry regions of Europe, Asia and Africa. You can find it along roadsides, on barren soil and wherever other plants would not survive.

Its name comes from the feature that makes it most troublesome to its surroundings. The fruit of tribulus is hard, woody and armed with sharp thorns that stick out in every direction like a ship's anchor, hence its Slovak name. In English, it is called puncture vine, a vine that punctures, because its fruit can pierce both a bicycle tyre and the sole of a shoe.

In the Ayurvedic tradition, the plant is known as gokshura and has been used for centuries. It also has an established place in traditional Chinese medicine, where the fruit is the main part processed.1 Both the fruit and the whole plant are processed, and both parts are listed in the composition of our extract.

The plant that made it into clinical trials

For most traditional herbs, the story ends with tradition. Tribulus is among the minority that have also undergone modern clinical research, with study designs rarely seen in the supplement category. The largest study was published in Maturitas. It was a prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase IV clinical trial with parallel groups. It involved one hundred and eighty men aged 18 to 65, divided into two groups of ninety, and lasted twelve weeks.2 That is a design on a par with a drug registration trial, not a typical supplement study.

Tribulus has also been studied in a sports context. One study followed trained boxers,3 while another examined six weeks of supplementation in trained CrossFit athletes using a randomised, single-blind, placebo-controlled design.4 A randomised, double-blind study has also been conducted in a female study population.5

None of these studies used just “some tribulus”. All used a standardised extract with a declared ratio and declared saponin content. Without these, the research could neither be replicated nor compared, which is precisely why plant materials are standardised in scientific practice. It is the same reason our label states both the 15:1 ratio and standardisation to 90 % saponins. Without these two numbers, “tribulus extract” is merely a plant name that could conceal almost anything.

What the 15:1 ratio means

This is the number that defines this product. An extraction ratio of 15:1 means that producing one gram of extract required fifteen grams of dried plant material.

Now work that out per serving. Eighteen grams of plant material. In two tablets. To consume that amount directly from the plant, you would have to prepare a decoction from eighteen grams of dried tribulus, which is exactly what people have done in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.

Saponins and how they got their name

The active compounds in tribulus are saponins. Their name comes from the Latin word sapo, meaning soap. This is not a metaphor: saponins really do behave like soap. Mix them in water and shake, and they form a foam. Chemists named them after this very property, which made them interesting long before anyone studied them analytically.

The saponin fraction is precisely why tribulus has made its way into clinical research, with study designs rarely seen in the supplement category. The largest study was published in Maturitas. It was a prospective, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase IV study involving 180 men aged 18 to 65 and lasting twelve weeks.1 A double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 98 female participants examined the effects of a daily dose of 1 000 mg of extract on markers of carbohydrate and fat metabolism over three months.2 Tribulus has also been studied in sports research, both in trained boxers3 and in trained CrossFit athletes in a six-week randomised, placebo-controlled study.4

All these studies share one feature that matters most to you. None used just “some tribulus”. Each used an extract with a declared ratio and declared saponin content; without these, the results could neither be replicated nor compared. Kamenov's study, for example, used an extract with a ratio of 35 to 45:1, standardised for furostanol saponins.1 Our extract is standardised to 90 % saponins. In 1 200 mg of extract, this amounts to 1 080 mg of saponins per daily serving.

What the 15:1 ratio means
Why tablets rather than powder

With tribulus, the form you take matters more than with most other plants, for a very simple reason. Tribulus is intensely bitter. Not mildly bitter, not “herbal”: it is one of those ingredients whose taste you remember. Traditionally, it was prepared as a decoction, and the bitterness was simply part of the process. A tablet eliminates this problem entirely. Swallow it with water and you do not have to worry about the taste at all. The dose is also measured during production – two tablets provide exactly 1 200 mg of extract, the same every time, with no scoop and no guesswork.

And there is another practical advantage: tablets are easy to take with you. Plant extract powder in a shaker is a different story.

Laboratory testing

The batch is tested by Labor Dr. Scheller GmbH in Augsburg, accredited to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018, DAkkS registration no. D-PL-19230-01-00, Certificate of Analysis PB26-2779.1

The lead level is seven tenths of a percent of the permitted limit, while cadmium and mercury were not detected above the limit of quantification. The sample complies with Regulation (EU) 2023/9152 on maximum levels of contaminants in food.

For a plant extract with a 15:1 ratio, this testing is particularly informative. Tribulus grows on barren roadside soil that is often affected by industrial pollution; it is a plant that thrives in places where others cannot survive. Concentrating it fifteenfold concentrates not only the active compounds but also everything else the plant has absorbed from the soil. That is precisely why, with this ingredient, it is worth knowing who tested it.

Why tablets rather than powder

Who is Tribulus Terrestris for?

  • Men who know tribulus from the training world and want it in a concentrated form. Not a powder with an undeclared ratio, but 1 200 mg of extract at 15:1 with declared standardisation.
  • Those who compare products by the numbers, not the packaging. Both the extraction ratio and saponin content are on the label — you will find neither on most tribulus products on the market.
  • People who are also interested in the science behind the ingredient. Tribulus is among the minority of traditional herbs that have undergone randomised, placebo-controlled studies.
  • Those planning long-term use. A pack of 240 tablets lasts four months at just under three cents a day.
